"Don't ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that.
Because what the world needs are people who come alive."
-Howard Thurman
- Tennessee Exotic Pest Plant Council: TN-EPPC's mission is to improve public awareness of the serious threats invasive plants pose to natural areas and provide solutions to manage those threats. I spearheaded TN-EPPC's study on the costs of invasive plant species in Tennessee, help organize and teach community workshops, have met with City coordinators to advise invasive plant management techniques for parks and greenways, and organized and led a citizen science canoe trip down the Nolichucky River to monitor invasive non-native Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife) populations.
- National Park Service: As a Biological Science Technician, I led volunteer work crews at an Adopt-a-Crag weekend and guest lectured a UT Ecosystem Ecology (EEB 405) course field trip in the Park.
- Science writing mentor for NSF and NIH fellows: I mentored doctoral fellows at the U. of Tennessee on science journalism as part of a semester-long science communication workshop. See an example of the work published as a result of this mentorship here: National Geographic Ocean Views guest article by Rachel Fovargue.
